The Purple Piano Project
Big Spender from Sweet Charity is featured in Dream On, the nineteenth episode of Season One and in The Purple Piano Project, the first episode of Season Three. In Dream On, it is sung by a candidate auditioning for Les Misérables, and in The Purple Piano Project, it is sung by Sugar as her audition for the New Directions.
This song/audition marks the first time that a person auditioned for New Directions and didn't make it because of their voice. Sugar has little musical talent and doesn't perform the song well, despite her deep belief in her own ability. Rachel is at first jealous of her, scared that she might steal the spotlight in New Directions. When Sugar begins to sing, however, Rachel realises that she will not offer any competition. The New Directions watch, haggard and pained, while Sugar draws out her performance with extended melodrama. The only exception is Brittany, who enjoys the performance.
The minute you walked in the joint
I could tell you were a man of distinction
A real big spender
Wouldn't you like to know what's going on in my mind
Hey, big spender!
Spend a little time with me, yeah
- This is the first song Sugar sung on the show.
- This song was also sung by Ellis Wylie, a contestant from the first season of The Glee Project, who later appeared on the show as an extra in Swan Song.
