I Dreamed a Dream from Les Misérables is featured in Dream On, the nineteenth episode of Season One. It is sung by Rachel and Shelby in a vivid dream sequence of them singing together, even though they have never met before.
They sing this song when Rachel hears her mom's voice for the first time on a tape that Jesse gives her. It is the second song from Les Misérables sung by Rachel, the first being On My Own in Pilot, the first episode of Season One.

Lyrics
Edit
Shelby:
I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high and life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Rachel:
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung
No wine untasted
Shelby (Rachel):
But the tigers come at night (But the tigers come at night)
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart (As they tear your hope apart)
As they turn your dream to
Shelby and Rachel:
Shame
Rachel:
And still I dream she'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather
Rachel and Shelby:
I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream
I dreamed
Trivia
Edit
- This is the first of four Rachel-Shelby duets. The second is Poker Face in Theatricality, the third is Somewhere in I Am Unicorn, and the fourth is Next To Me in Sweet Dreams.
- In the musical Les Miserables this is sung by Fantine who leaves her daughter Cosette to Jean Valjean (the main character). In Glee, Shelby gives up Rachel to the gay couple who become her parents. Ironically, Lea Michele has played a young Cosette in a production of Les Mis.
