Jesus Is My Friend by Sonseed is featured in Original Song, the sixteenth episode of Season Two. It is sung by Aural Intensity.
They sing it at the 2011 Midwest Regional Championship, under the guidance of the at-the-time director Sue. The song is intended to appeal to judges Sister Mary Constance, a nun, and Tammy Jean Albertson, a conservative Christian politician. The song is used strategically, much like how in the previous year, Aural Intensity had sung songs by judges Josh Groban and Olivia Newton-John. A biased Tammy Jean Albertson thinks they should win, but Sister Mary Constance feels that Aural Intensity was "pandering" to the judges and that she did not care for it.
Girl #1:
He taught me how to live my life as it should be
He taught me how to turn my cheek when people laugh at me
I’ve had friends before and I can tell you that
He’s one who will never leave you flat
Aural Intensity:
Hallelujah!
Jesus is a friend of mine
Male #1:
J-J-J-J-Jesus
Aural Intensity:
Jesus is my friend of mine
Friend of mine, friend of mine, friend of mine! Wow!
Despite being a Christian song, at the end, Aural Intensity forms a Star of David, which is a Jewish symbol. This could be an indication of how much Sue knows about Religion (though it should be noted that Jesus was Jewish himself), or may be another reference to conservative politics in the United States.
