O'Malley was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Marianne and Tony O'Malley. He was raised in Nashua, New Hampshire. O'Malley graduated from Bishop Guertin High School in 1984 and graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1988.
O'Malley posts pictures of himself with other actors and actresses for his Coffee Table book: #WearingOtherPeopleshair on his offical Twitter account.
O'Malley hosted Nickelodeon GUTS for three years in the 1990s. He starred on Yes, Dear for six years before the show ended in 2006. O'Malley had a recurring role on My Name Is Earl for three years until 2009 and has a recurring role on Glee since 2009.
