Shirley MacLaine, born Shirley MacLean Beaty on April 24, 1934, is an American film and theater actress, singer, dancer, activist and author. She is best known for her roles in The Apartment, Irma la Douce, Terms of Endearment, Madame Sousatzka, and guest starred on Glee as June Dolloway.

Personal life

MacLaine was born in Richmond, Virginia, to Kathlyn MacLean and Ira Beaty. She has a brother, Warren.[1] MacLaine would adapted her mother's maiden name, MacLean, into her stage name MacLaine.[2]

MacLaine married Steve Parker in 1954 and after twenty-eight years they divorced in 1982. Their daughter, Stephanie "Sachi" Parker, was born in 1956.[3]

Sachi wrote in her memoir, Lucky Me, that "MacLaine rarely saw her as a child, refused to pay for college and pressured her to have sex as a recent high school graduate." MacLaine would release a statement obtained by Daily News that it was "virtually all fiction."[4]

MacLaine would go on to date Robert Mitchum, Andrew Peacock, and Pete Hamill.[1]

Career

Her Broadway debut was in Me and Juliet and it ended in 1954, almost a year when she debuted in 1953. She would go on to be in The Pajama Game for two years till 1956, Shirley MacLaine in 1976, and Shirley MacLaine on Broadway for a month in 1984.

MacLaine made her television debut on Shower of Stars in 1955 and film debut in Alfred Hitchcocks' Trouble with Harry in 1955; received a Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer – Female.

She was in Around the World in Eighty Days in 1956, The Apartment in 1960; received a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture Actress - Musical/Comedy, and Irma la Douce in 1963; received a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture Actress - Musical/Comedy.

MacLaine was in Gambit in 1966, in the loosely based Walburga Oesterreich story in The Bliss of Mrs. Blossom in 1968, on Shirley's World as main title character for a year till 1972, and Terms of Endearment; received a Best Actress in a Leading Role and a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama.

She was in Madame Sousatzka in 1988; received a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama and in Steel Magnolias in 1989. She also appeared in Bruno in 2000, Rumor Has It.../'In Her Shoes/Bewitched in 2005 and Lifetime's Coco Chanel in 2008.

MacLaine was also in Valentine's Day in 2010, on Downtown Abbey for three episodes between 2012 and 2013, and on Glee for two episodes in 2014.
