As the members of New Directions are still coming to terms with the fact that the club has been cancelled, this song is sung as a thank you to Mr. Schuester, showing that they can all change from their previous ways. Everyone was very emotional during the performance, either crying or very close to tears. Sue is seen watching the performance at the entrance of the April Rhodes Civic Pavilion.
Those school girl days
Of telling tales and biting nails are gone
But in my mind
I know they will still live on and on
But how do you thank someone
Who has taken you from crayons to perfume?
Oh, it isn't easy, but I’ll try
Rachel with New Directions (with Artie and Santana):
(If you wanted the sky, I would write)
Across the sky in (letters)
That would soar a thousand feet high (Artie and Santana with New Directions: Soar high)
Artie and Rachel (and Santana) with New Directions:
To sir, with (love)
Tina with Artie:
The time has come
For closing books
And long last looks must end
Finn and Mercedes:
And as I leave
I know that I am leaving my best friend
A friend who taught me right from wrong
And weak from strong
That’s a lot to learn
What can I gift you in return? (Oh)
Rachel with Artie, Santana, and New Directions (Rachel with New Directions):
If you wanted the moon, I would try (to make a start)
(But I would) rather you let me give my heart
To sir, with love
- This is the last song Matt Rutherford is seen performing as a member of New Directions on the show due to his departure prior to the Season Two premiere, Audition.
- His actual last song ended up being I Lived, the only song he ever sang following To Sir, with Love.
- At the end of the episode New Directions, Will remembers some quotes from his students. A few of the quotes are said, prior to this song, when the New Directions were explaining what Glee Club has meant in their lives. Then, they sang this song to express gratitude to Mr. Schue.
