Turning Tables by Adele is featured in A Night of Neglect, the seventeenth episode of Season Two. It is sung at the benefit by Holly as she expresses how she is feeling about her relationship with Will and her plans to leave, which she has not told anyone about yet. Will still does not suspect that she is leaving after this song, and Holly has to tell him what it meant.

Lyrics[]

Holly:
Close enough to start a war,
All that I have is on the floor,
God only knows what we're fighting for,
All that I say, you always say more,
I can't keep up with your turning tables,
Under your thumb, I can't breathe,
So I won't let you close enough to hurt me,
No, I won't ask you, you to just desert me,
I cant give you, what you think you gave me,
It's time to say goodbye to turning tables,
To turning tables,

Under haunted skies I see you, ooh,
Where love is lost, your ghost is found,
I braved a hundred storms to leave you,
As hard as you try, no,
I will never be knocked down,
I can't keep up with your turning tables,
Under your thumb, I can't breathe,

So I won't let you close enough to hurt me,
No, I won't ask you, you to just desert me,
I can't give you what you think you gave me,
It's time to say goodbye to turning tables,
Turning tables,

Next time I'll be braver,
I'll be my own savior,
When the thunder calls for me,
Next time I'll be braver,
I'll be my own savior,
Standing on my own two feet,

I won't let you close enough to hurt me,
No, I won't ask you, you to just desert me,
I can't give you, what you think you gave me,
It's time to say goodbye to turning tables,
To turning tables,
Turning tables, yeah,
Turning, oh.

Trivia[]

  • Matthew Morrison apparently teared up many times while watching Gwyneth sing and perform this song, and had a hard time not crying.
  • For unknown reasons, some of the lines in the chorus were changed. She sings 'I won't ask you,' where it is actually 'I won't rescue.'
  • This is the first of the six songs by Adele that have been covered in the show, the other ones being Rolling in the Deep, Rumour Has It, Someone Like You, Chasing Pavements and Make You Feel My Love.
    • It is also one of the four songs that were sung on the show from Adele's album 21, released in 2011, the others being Rolling in the Deep, Rumour Has it and Someone Like You.
  • When the Glee version was released and debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #66, the original version of the song also debuted at #63.
