Season Five of Glee is set to air on September 12, 2013. The fifth season continues to focus on the current New Directions and the alumni as they continue to make their way through the world dealing with relationships, sex, bullying, marriage, battery and other social issues. As of the season premiere seventeen cast members retain their status from the fourth season: glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison), cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), glee club members Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale), Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss), Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz), Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist), Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist), Ryder Lynn (Blake Jenner), Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) and Kitty Wilde (Becca Tobin), and graduates Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), Mike Chang (Harry Shum Jr.), Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith), Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer), Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley), Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera) and Noah "Puck" Puckerman (Mark Salling).
Heather Morris who plays Brittany Pierce will appear less frequently this season. Morris, Dianna Agron who plays Quinn Fabray and Jayma Mays who plays guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury are being credited as guest stars this season.

Plot: The Glee Club finds themselves with a daunting task: replacing Brittany who went to MIT for an early semester. Brittany finds herself enjoying every moment of college, but finds that she misses a specific person. Kurt gives Blaine an answer after Blaine's proposal. Rachel continues to rehearse for the opening of Funny Girl which is in a couple of weeks, but recieves an unexpected visitor along with a new rival who will do anything to get Rachel out of the spotlight. Plot: After becoming annoyed with Tina's stuck-up behavior, Marley challenges her to a sing-off, causing Tina and the seniors to pit against Marley and the sophmores. Rachel is unsure whether to get back together with Finn, but when Finn thinks that she's not interested he decides to fly to Lima and forget about her, so it's up to Rachel to beat Finn to the airport to tell her real feelings for him. Santana gets a tempting job offer, and decides to take it, unaware of the risks and dangers and despite Brittany's warnings. Plot: With Nationals around the corner, Will gives the Glee Club an assignemt to sing old songs from Disney. The only issue is, the Glee Club believes that the songs coming out now are classic Disney, prompting Will to take them back in time. Tina is unsure what she wants to do after she graduates High School so Marley helps her through Disney music. Finn comes down with a flu and Rachel leaves Kurt and Santana to take care of him while she runs errands, leaving the only movies they have on television are Disney movies. The illness begins to get to Finn when he dreams that he's in some classic Disney movies--with the Glee Cast starring in them. Blaine auditions for NYADA and uses the weekly assignment as a guidance.
