The Freshman all sat in the cafe across the street from NYADA, after their final Diva Off of the term. Their teachers had pushed them this time. This time around they gave them a homework assignment with it:
1. Select a Solo from a Broadway musical (Any era) 2. Describe the emotional level the character is feeling and was this achieved in its initial performance in 2000 words.
The usage of the written assignment shocked many of those who got through with just their voices, but for Kurt and Rachel, they breezed through it. Especially with Harmony by their side helping.
"So when did they say they'd be posting the final scores?" Angela asked, taking a sip from her coffee cup.
"Not for a while I don't think. They'd have to grade and asses the essays." Austin said, sitting next to Claude.
"It's annoying how they called us in one by one," Claude said, glancing at his boyfriend. "How'd you think you went?"
"I did fine." Austin blushed when Claude leant in to kiss him.
"We could hear each other if we listened at the door, though." Kurt added, looking up from his phone. "Or was I the only one who did that?"
"Guys!" Rachel snapped. Everyone turned to her. "Shelby is coming over, look!."
The cafe door opened and Shelby did in fact walk in.
They all greeted her and were shocked to see her pull up a seat.
"Now, we have read over your essays, they aren't what we were expecting. We were pleasantly surprised, your performances how ever. We have seen better."
Everyone shared worried glances.
"What has become obvious to us is that we need to concentrate on how to divide your time and research. We can see that you have looked into the song and musical history but we just couldn't see that in the performance."
"So, what will we have to do?" Harmony asked.
"We want you to come and see the Seniors perform. Like you, they have a final performance, but instead of a showcase it's a musical performance. They only started rehearsing a couple of weeks ago and are having their technical tomorrow. If you choose to stay you will have to learn to rehearse and perform while under pressure, so this is away to show you the quality we will be expecting. So if you all could follow me."
Shelby stood, followed by the rest of the class and followed her back to NYADA. They continued to follow her into a unknown part of the building.
"Look at all these posters." Kurt whispered to Rachel as they past a wall covered in framed posters promoting musicals the school had put on.
"Look, West Side Story." She sniffed when she looked at the actress who was playing Maria.
"You would've beat her hands down. Just look at the way she is looking at Tony, you can see that she's trying to act."
The group stopped outside a door. Shelby told the group to wait and she walked in. The students began to talk to each other, saying how bad they must've done to have Shelby bring them here. The door opened and instead of Ms. Corcoran, Carmen Tibideaux stood in the door way, smiling.
"Good to see you all. Come in, come in!"
She waved the group in and closed the door behind them.
"Good to see you Rachel and Kurt." She said as she rushed past them.
"You too." Rachel added weakly.
She was glancing around the room. It was a large studio, larger than the one they had been practicing in, with only a hand full of Seniors standing around watching the group file in. Rachel noticed a girl with long dark brown hair in a pony tail, in running gear standing next to a boy dressed same whispering and giggling as they watched them.
"Look." Rachel siad, elbowing Kurt and tilting her head at the couple. "They talking about us."
"Ignore them." Kurt said, after looking them up and down.
The group sat in a row of chairs that had been laid out for them against the mirrored wall.
"Welcome Freshman." Carmen said, standing in front of them, smiling warmly. "I'm glad to have you all here to see our Senior class in a rehearsal. I was told that Ms Corcoran wanted to give you an idea of what we will be expecting from you. The seniors have chosen to perform Next to Normal as their musical assessment. They have directed and choreographed it all themselves, which is what you too will be expected to do. Now without further ado, Seniors, when your ready!"
Carmen sat down next to Shelby as the Seniors got in to place and then the music started.
Kurt knew this musical by heart and was ready to judge everyone involved if they screwed it up in the tiniest way. Only they didn't, from the first note the brown haired girl made as Diane made Kurt whimper.
They're the perfect loving family, so adoring
And I love them every day of every week
He turned to Rachel who looked over at him, shocked, more so than when they first heard Harmony sing. They turned back.
Still I help them love each other
Father, mother, sister, brother
Cheek to cheek.
A blonde girl entered and bumped into the brown haired one, she was playing Natalie.
"Natalie, it's 3 in the morning, is everything ok?"
"Everything's great, why wouldn't it be great? It's great! I've just got 3 more chapters of calculus a physics problem set, a history quiz and 2 pages on floral imagery in Flowers for Algernon' which so like, DUH, everything's so under control., it's just like calm."
The girl playing Diane exited. The blonde girl began to sing.
So it's times like these I wonder how I take it
And if other familes live the way we do
If they love each other or they just fake it
And if other daughters feel like I feel too
Cause some days I think I'm dying
But I'm really only trying not to get through
A boy stood behind her and sang as Gabe.
For just another day, for another stolen hour
When the world will feel my power and obey
Kurt and Rachel stayed in awe all the way to the end of the Act. The freshman applauded, all shocked. Shelby stood after the seniors bowed.
"I hope you enjoyed that, I sure did. Any questions?"
No one raised a hand.
"Um. Ok then. You guys are free to go. I hope you all learned something."
